South Korea integrates AI into border surveillance system

On January 9, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced for the first time the development of a science-based border security system with AI image analysis, thermal imaging, and short-wave infrared features.

According to DAPA, the AI image analysis component allows the surveillance system to identify objects in detail and distinguish between humans and wildlife. Thermal imaging and short-wave infrared technology ensure the surveillance system remains operational regardless of weather conditions.

Initially, the enhanced AI-integrated surveillance system will be introduced at eastern guard posts (GOPs) and later at coastal units by the end of this year. GOPs are military outposts along the southern edge of the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas.

DAPA hopes the system will improve frontline troop operating conditions by reducing false alarms. The agency kicked off the project in 2022 and contracted with S-1 security company to develop the system in November 2023.

General Son-sik, head of the Ground Operations Command, said he would accelerate the deployment of the AI-powered scientific protection system and actively use it in security activities to optimize readiness capabilities.
