Although it is OpenAI’s biggest investor, Microsoft Corporation did not have its own representative on the company’s board of directors. After the 2023 scandal, Microsoft has secured the right to appoint a supervisor to OpenAI’s leadership.
Bloomberg reported that Microsoft’s candidate has been approved. Dee Templeton, Vice President of Technology and Research Operations and Partnerships, with over 25 years of experience at Microsoft, will become a member of OpenAI’s board of directors.
According to Bloomberg, Dee Templeton has begun attending OpenAI board meetings, but the supervisor status does not give Microsoft’s representative voting rights.
Currently, OpenAI’s board includes former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo – the only one on the old OpenAI board to survive the 2023 scandal.
After returning as OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman promised that the new board would be reconstituted quickly and expanded in size, but did not give specific numbers on the scale of the new leadership.
For Microsoft, the official appointment of the company’s representative to OpenAI’s board will further increase the attention of antitrust authorities towards the corporation’s activities.
In the US and UK, regulators have begun closely monitoring the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI for antitrust compliance.
